Castlebar Workhouse
Castlebar workhouse opened in 1842. For more information see Peter Higginbotham's website, www.workhouses.org.uk/Castlebar.
Nothing remains of the workhouse buildings today, as they were completely demolished prior to the building of the Sacred Heart Hospital, a long term residential nursing hospital. In 2013 a memorial plaque was unveiled at the site by Taoiseach Enda Kenny, commemorating all those buried in the grounds. |
Castlebar Workhouse Records
Official records show that 15 girls were sent from the Castlebar workhouse to Australia, however, unfortunately no records survive for the Castlebar Poor Law Union for the period of the Scheme.
The Castlebar workhouse girls were part of the group who travelled on the Panama to Sydney, departing Plymouth on 6 October 1849 and arriving in Sydney on 12 January 1850.
