Catherine McDermott, ex Lady Kennaway
Catherine McDermott was age 16 when she arrived in Melbourne on the Lady Kennaway. Neither of her parents were living, and she was not able to read or write. There are two different records for the arrival of the Lady Kennaway; one records her place of origin as Mayo, the other, Donegal.
Catherine only spent two days in the Immigration Depot before she was hired as a house servant by E. Griffiths of Melbourne, at a rate of £11 for a term of 6 months.
There is a possibility that Catherine was the sister of Ann McDermott, age 15, who left Ballina workhouse on the next ship that took Mayo girls to Australia, the Inchinnan. On arrival in Sydney, Ann told the Immigration Agent that a "Sister named Catherine McDermott" was already in the colony. Ann said Catherine was "living in Sydney", however it is possible that she was not aware where Catherine was sent when she left the workhouse.
No other records for Catherine McDermott have been located.
