Bridget Brown, ex Lady Kennaway
Bridget Brown was age 15 when she arrived in Melbourne on the Lady Kennaway. Neither of her parents were still living, and she could not read or write.
Almost two months after arriving in Melbourne, Bridget was apprenticed to James Barry, of Elizabeth St in Melbourne, for two years at a rate of £6pa.
It is possible that Bridget Brown was the sister of Mary Browne, who was sent from Ballina workhouse to Sydney on the Panama, one year after Bridget left Ballina workhouse for the Lady Kennaway to Melbourne. On arrival in Sydney, Mary Browne stated that a sister named Bridget Browne was already in the colony.
